Mljet

Mljet National Park was established in 1960 and occupies a large part of the surface of the island and the surrounding sea. Although Mljet is the 8th largest island in the Adriatic, it has a population of just over 1,000 inhabitants.

Island of St. Mary is located on the “Big” lake. Small island houses a monastery from 12th century built by the Benedictine monks.

Mljet has one of the biggest and nicest Pine forest in the Mediterranean.

Hiking

Mljet hiking trail (MPO) is 43 kilometers long and can last for 3-4 days (23 hours). The entire route is marked, hiking signs and seals are fitted to 20 control points. We suggest you to take and have the ink pad for collecting stamps at all control points.

Cycling

Since Mljet is one of the biggest islands in the Adriatic there are many possible routes to take but local MTB enthusiast created 6 recommended mountain bike routes. Routes arrange from 16 to 68 km long and have different difficulties. Some parts of the routes are off road and following some hiking trails with the biggest possible clime of 1120 m above sea level.

Fishing

Vessels or any kind of fishing is not allowed in the two lakes inside the National park but it is possible to buy a fishing license for other parts of the island. Many different types of sea fishing are allowed including big game fishing, long line fishing, jigging and others.

Other Activities

In coordination with a park it is possible to rent a canoe and experience the unique views of the Park from the sea as well as visit many secluded bays.

Mljet is a really popular sailing destination with a wide range of offers.

Speleology is always interesting in karst environments but the most popular destination is the Odysseys grotto. Grotto has is flooded by the sea and it has a land and the small see entrance. According to some theories Mljet could be the island of Ogygia where Odysseys was shipwrecked. This grotto is the location where nymph Calypso nursed him back to life and then enchanted him in order to keep him with her for the next 7 years.

Diving in the clean and clear sea surrounding the island and teaming with life is something you should not miss. All diving in Croatia has to be coordinated with local diving clubs.

Cultural Heritage

Island of St. Mary is located on the “Big” lake. Small island houses a monastery from 12th century built by the Benedictine monks. Though the centuries the monastery was expended and parts of it were redecorated so today most of it is decorated in the renaissance style.

Mljet housed one of the biggest roman palaces in the Adriatic built in the 1st century BCE. Located in a beautiful natural harbour its towering walls encircled two basilicas, hot baths, army barracks and so on.

The island also has many old small churches usually positioned on hilltops. Most of them date back to the 10th to 12th century.
