Krka (Dalmatia)

Krka National Park, established in 1985, is located 17 km from Šibenik and 100 km from Split. Park includes the most beautiful part of the Krka River and the lower course of Čikola river.

Attractions

Swimming underneath a waterfall (only in clearly marked locations)

Three guided boat excursions up the river, most popular one includes a visit to Visovac lake and a 15th century Franciscan monastery and church located on a small island inside the lake.

Remains of Krka hydroelectric power plant build in 1895 as the first in Europe.

An Ethno village housed in several restored 19th century water mills present the way people in this area lived several centuries ago including milling wheat, waving fabrics, horseshoe smiting, preparing food and so on.

Hiking

Hiking trails crisscross most of the national park allowing you access to beautiful nature and unique cave system. Marked trails with educational signs connect the two biggest waterfalls Skradinski Buk and Rogaski Slap and take you over the river and across the travertine barriers on a series of walkways built from wood.

Cycling

There are no marked Cycling trails inside the National Park but a wide network of local roads serves as a great way to go thought this unique and challenging terrain.

Fishing

Angling in not allowed inside the National Park but it is possible to fish in the Adriatic Sea which is just 20 km away.

Cultural Heritage

The area of the Park is full of cultural and historical monuments. These include archaeological sites, monuments of sacral heritage and industrial architecture. Several 14th century fortress. Krka hydroelectric AC power plant built by Croatian inventor Nikola Tesla, the power plant was built in 1895 as the first of its kind in Europe and second in the world. Visovac, a small island in the middle of Visovac lake hosts a Franciscan monastery and church built in 1445. Park also includes a 2000 year old roman military camp and many other important sites.

Gifts

The souvenir shop is housed inside a restored water mill on Skradinski buk. The shop offers a wide selection of souvenirs from replicas of old objects (woven bags, old jewellery...) to modern items like CDs, books and so on.
